The ban on bullfighting in Catalonia was approved by the Parliament of Catalonia on 28 July 2010, resulting from a petition (or Popular Legislative Initiative, PLI) which was originated in Catalonia by the Prou! platform (Catalan for 'Enough!') to ban bullfighting in Catalonia.[1] The vote was 68 votes for, 55 against and nine abstentions.[2] making it the second autonomous community of Spain to ban bullfighting after the Canary Islands in 1991.[3] The ban will come into force on 1 January 2012. The ban does not affect correbous, a festive activity.
Bullfighting in Catalonia
The only operating bullring in Catalonia is "La Monumental" in Barcelona, where 20 fights were organized in 2009: this compares to 284 fights organized in the Community of Madrid (with a similar population to Catalonia).[4] Nine fights were organized between April and July 2010 (see image). Organizers say that average attendance is around 7,000 people, although only 400 are season ticket holders.[5][6]
Popular Legislative Initiative
The approval of the PLI repealed the exception to the second paragraph of Article 6 of the Animal Protection Act:[7][8]
| “ |
a) Bullfighting in places where, on the effective date of Law 3/1988, of March 4th, regarding animal welfare, there are bullrings built to perform it, to which access must be prohibited to persons under fourteen years of age. |

—Law 3/1988, [9]

And added to the first paragraph:[7]
| “ |
f. Bullfights and bull shows that include the death of the animal and the application of the lance, the banderillas and the sword, as well as any bull shows of any type that are performed in bullrings or out of them, with the exception of celebrations with bulls that are referred to in section b) of the second paragraph of article 6. |
